The regional director of the National Civil Defense Institute (INDECI) Costa Center, Darío Chirinos, said today that the targets for reducing vulnerable areas of the rivers are clearly stipulated in the rules and local authorities must comply.

"We will make the monitoring of critical areas and then return to communicate with local authorities," he said.

The official noted that 90% of the task at Indeci in regard to decrease the risk of overflowing rivers is good supervision. The other 10% is given provisions on the subject.

"To alert the competent authorities to identify critical points in each jurisdiction, but also we will focus on the type of activities to be undertaken to overcome their weaknesses in risk management."

In Lurigancho-Chosica, the desilting of rivers is a permanent task of the municipality. Michael Layne, Civil Defense deputy district municipality, said the task was reinforced in recent months of the year before the rising river.

"By monitoring the channel becomes stronger cleaning, reviewing and retaining walls when these require reinforcing or building. Most of the silting of the river is by the stones that accumulate in different spots."
